Term 1 Maths / Pāngarau
From Fran's teacher:
During Term One, we have been working on number knowledge and have also begun
exploring statistics, with a specific focus on:
Place value - knowing and understanding the value of different digits within a whole
number (3671 = 3000 + 600 + 70 + 1).
Using different addition and subtraction strategies when working with whole numbers,
including number lines, place value and the vertical working form (also known as the
algorithm).
Multiplication of three-digit numbers by a one-digit number, and multiplying two two-digit
whole numbers (e.g., 245 × 6; 34 × 83).
Division of up to a three-digit whole number by a one-digit divisor, with a remainder (e.g.,
83 ÷ 5 = 16, remainder 3).
Interpreting information and communicating strategies to solve problems.
Carrying out statistical investigations, using a range of representations for recording and
presenting data.
Fran, we notice that you have a firm grasp of the values different digits have within a whole
number. You also have a sound understanding of both addition and subtraction strategies with
those larger five-digit numbers that often require regrouping(borrowing) and carrying, ie 45291-
21347=23944.
You can independently complete both two and three digit multiplications with either a single or
two-digit multiplier. You understand the strategies but sometimes your basic facts knowledge
results in the a different answer being recorded. You have been working to strengthen your
understanding of different division strategies. These strategies have developed well and you are
often called upon in small groups and full class lessons to share your answers. You currently can
divide two- digits but a single digit divisor that results in an answer with a remainder.
Your basic facts are progressing well as you already understand them all up to twelve times
twelve and can you are working to recall them with both accuracy and speed.
You work well within a small group you are able to interpret information and communicate
strategies to solve problems often being the first to answer questions and being a trusted and
respected member of our class when it comes to your mathematical knowledge. You always
choose difficult questions when given the opportunity to challenge yourself which we love to
see.
To progress further, it would be good to see Fran continue her times tables knowledge, being
able to recall these with speed and accuracy will have a positive flow on effect to her larger
number multiplication and division strategies.
