Statue of Liberty
Statue of Liberty
We climbed 195 steps to the pedestal. Did you know that the statue was a gift from France to celebrate the United States 100 years of Independence? She (formal name: Liberty Enlightening the World) was modeled after Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. Made of copper with interior supports designed by Eiffel. She is 151 feet tall, at the time the tallest structure in the US. Bartholdi, the designer, gained inspiration from the great ancient wonders like the Colossus of Rhodes.
