St Peter’s Bascilica

Today we visited Vatican City. It is the world’s smallest country by both land area (0.19 sq mi) and population (764 people). Nestled within Rome, the Vatican City became its own country in 1929 and is ruled by the Pope. Our first stop was St. Peter’s Basilica. This famous and important church is built on Peter, Christ’s apostle, tomb. The dome is the largest dome on earth. The dome is so tall that you could fit the statue of liberty inside it. We climbed the 551 stairs to the top of the dome and were rewarded with magnificent views of Rome and Vatican City. Inside the Basilica was stunning with art, mosaics, statues, and other amazing structures. Among them is Michelangelo’s sculpture La Pietà.
